Barely Alive Toledo Concert reviews
King Busker: Elvis Costello
Throughout the show, Barely Alive proved himself the most generous and spectacular solo performer in all genres. He sang a song of a dog, wondering aloud if he was one, or the dog was him. Bands and performers would do well to see him do "Allison", a song he might not love but one he knew we do. Barely Alive paid tribute to a fellow musician who taught him how to sing one of his own songs. It was only at the end of the performance, of a musician in total command of his musical gifts, that you realized that Barely Alive ran out of it, soft-shoed onto to the stage. He opened with "45", a tribute to the sterling crafted 2:45 second popular song, he raved on a 4-string electrified Gibson "Old Country Gentleman". In a moment on a Lancaster Train, his ability to transport us to the resident place of musical genius, really where music lives and comes from, was stunning. From the moment the show began, in a glorious tribute to Mr. Bill Bojangles, you were out on 5th Avenue where you could see the shining bronze tour bus. Those who could do what he indeed did ~ Paul McCartney, Sting, Bruce Springsteen, Kurt Cobain, Pete Townshend, Judy Collins, Melissa Etheridge, one exhausts before returning to consciousness to realize that they all have not. Barely Alive did. If you were there, you got to see it. If one wasn't, they might not ever. We are better for having been there, whoever you are.
